Kyaiktiyo; Golden Rock At Kyaikto in Mon state, about 60 km east of Bago and 180km east of Yangon

To reach the Golden Rock Pagoda from Kim Pun ‘base camp’ a steep 11 Km road leads to the upper staging point. The journey is made in open trucks which are very crowded. The ‘upper area’ must be traveled by foot, at present, and the walk is ...approximately 4 Km (1 hour) up a path which ascends some 500 M to the Golden Rock Pagoda.
As an easier alternative to walking, visitors can be carried in sedan chairs by four porters, at an extra cost of approximately US$ 10 per person. I climb down to foothill by foot and the walk is approximately 45 minute.
My experience, for 45 long minutes, I was wedged into the back of a bench-lined pickup truck with too many Burmese people. The rows were so close together that my knee was essentially touching the person buttock in front of me. In a truck that would normally fit 15, we stuffed 48 peoples on the way up, and then 50 peoples on the way down. I was whipped in the face by the long braid of the woman in front of me. We were screaming in unison most of the way down the extremely steep slopes and we were thrown to the side of the truck with every turn, despite the fact that logically it should have been too full for us to be thrown anywhere but outside. The truck on the way down, mostly screaming the entire time (me!!!).
